IT’S HERE, IT’S HERE! CSA SIGN UP SEASON IS HERE!
Alright, maybe not everyone is as excited as I am about the start of CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) sign up season. In fact, many may not even know what the heck a CSA is. When you sign up to become a member of a CSA, you are making an investment in a farm in exchange for a share of the harvest throughout the season. It’s similar to weekly subscription boxes you may have seen ads for, but CSA is the most direct way to buy local food. It provides the farmer with much needed capital at the beginning of the season, which makes it possible for them to order the seeds, tools and supplies required to grow, harvest, pack and deliver your share.
CSA sign up season is the time of year when local farmers emerge from their well deserved, albeit short, hibernation and prepare for the growing season ahead - which typically runs May through November. Of course they weren’t just resting all winter - they spend these months poring over seed catalogs and crafting their crop plan. They nerd out about specialty and heirloom varieties, drawing new plot maps, and buying tools and equipment to improve efficiency and safety.
And as spring nears, growing food is only part of a farmer's job. Across the Willamette Valley, farmers are looking for people to join their community and support their hard work to cultivate fresh, high quality and delicious food.
Many farmers have even adapted their CSA to better meet the needs of their members. This includes offering small shares for smaller households, meat/dairy/egg/grain add-ons, and even shares that are 100% customizable so you pick exactly what you get each week. The great news is that there are so many to choose from in our community, you can definitely find the right one for for you!
