About Birch Social

Small farms and food businesses are the backbone of the communities in which they live and operate. They provide a sense of place and connection. They build memories and nourish our bodies as they steward the land for future generations. However, we demand a lot from the people that grow, raise, and craft our food. Often working with high risk and upfront expenses, they must also find and sustain their own customer base amongst a highly competitive market.
Birch Social was founded to alleviate some of that burden so that owners can focus their energy in the field and in the kitchen. We partner with producers to find the sweet spot of their business and identify ways to operationalize sales and marketing activities - whether that’s growing their CSA, joining more farmers markets, adding wholesale accounts, or inviting customers out to their farm/facilities. We glean the why and how of what they do so that they can share their story and increase awareness, lock in committed customers and ultimately build community through the shared love of food.

Here at Birch Social, we believe in the transformative potential of involving more people in our local food system. We want to help small food and farming businesses cultivate engaged customers who feel a sense of connection to the people and land that nourish them.

Everything that we do is rooted in our aim to celebrate the power of local food from field to table. We hope that by creating connections between producers and eaters, they will find opportunities to be social with one another. These relationships are forged in many ways, whether it be over a chat at the farmers market booth, while leading or participating in an on-farm workshop, or by breaking bread together. Food creates a natural way to commune and we are always down to be social!

About Me

Mallory Cochrane, Founder

I am driven by my passion to contribute to an economy that creates social change by developing interdependent relationships amongst all involved in the cultivation, distribution, and consumption of local, regenerative food.

I have worked in nearly every aspect of regional food system network design and distribution. I started my career building and managing one of the nation’s first farmers’ market incentive programs with an aim to remove barriers to accessing fresh food for low-income residents across San Diego County. Through cultivating a strong grower network and building cross-sector partnerships, I ultimately managed multiple farmer’s markets throughout San Diego.

Returning to my Oregon roots, I joined Our Table Cooperative, where I executed the lead operational role of the innovative multi-stakeholder cooperative. I established partnerships with local growers, managed all direct-to-consumer sales and distribution, and launched a retail store and events business on the farm.

After having a baby and needing a break from on-the-ground farm and retail work, I started Birch Social so that I could continue to engage with and support local farms. I have been able to put the culmination of my work experience into action helping farmers in Oregon tell their story and bring more people into the local food system.
